The iPad – An Innovation that Transforms

I recently bought Apple’s latest product – the iPad. The move was more of an intuitive impulse, rather than a labored and thought through process; the latter being a more regular style when I am adding new technology to my life. In this case the decision was swift and instant, almost as soon as I could lay my hands on a piece (note: currently the iPad is only available in the US and some other European markets). It was like my intuitive self said “go for this one”.

What I have seen in the last few days is simply spectacular and basically transforms the manner in which I interact with my information, work, audio and video. While there are many reviews on the internet looking at the technical aspects of the iPad, I do not intend to get into a lot of those. My requirements are more basic. I need to be able to work with my photo albums, work related files (word, excel, power point), my music, the internet, email, client documents, watch videos and read the occasional book online. The iPad fits these needs perfectly.

The key differentiating factor of the iPad is its form factor and ergonomic design. On a very fundamental and visceral level the iPad feels “normal” to hold, work with, carry and relate to. Finally I can say goodbye to those “bulky laptops”. Here is something that feels like a very thin book in my hands (it’s only 0.5 inches thick) and is potently powerful. It has a wondrous screen with great space and multiple touch capabilities, a top class and large (on-screen) keyboard (please do not think of the iPhone – the iPad’s screen and keyboard are a class of its own and something with which you can comfortably word process even with large fingers and at a fast pace).

This form factor is coupled with a battery that lasts for almost 12 hours, thus ensuring you can go through the entire day comfortably on one charge, eliminating the need really to carry any charger with you. And these hardware dynamics are supported by some great efficient software. Of course what I found a great blessing is that the iPad boots instantly, as soon as you press the “on” button. Thus no more waiting endlessly for the operating systems to boot up. In fact the iPad boots faster than any phone either, since it really has no boot time, you simply switch it on and off.

The iPad has thus created a new category and in many ways is an innovation that will transform the way humans interact with technology. It has created an ‘industry and innovation opening’, which I am sure others will take forward, develop and create a form (or forms) that make intuitive and ergonomic technology a manifested reality. From that point of view the iPad is bringing the future closer and closer.

  1. Hi Dennis,

I sincerely enjoyed reading your view on iPad where the biggest USP highlighted in your article is the fact that it can turn ON and OFF immediately, and has a 12 hour battery life.

I would also suggest you add a point on “why people should not compare iPhone and iPad”, because I often hear people say; “this is just a magnified version of iPhone – only bigger in size”. But my overall satisfaction in reading your review on iPad is very good, and I look forward to reading more reviews from you soon.

    Have nice a day!

    1. Dear Neeil,

Thanks for your kind words. The truth is those who speak of the iPad being a glorified or larger iPod touch or iPhone, have really not tried the iPad. For me, the iPad has already replaced my laptop, it’s powerful, light, ergonomic and has all the right stuff I need to function on the go.

No doubt, future versions will include many improvements. But it is still a game changer.

  2. Dennis,

This is unreal!! Why dont you do an ip address check to verify that the Steve Jobs comment is coming from their HQ in Cupertino, California.

The IPhone4 went on sale today and is no longer on prototype mode. But with the above comments you can look forward to a lifetime free supply of apple products 🙂

  3. Dear Mr. Jobs,

I am absolutely delighted that you found this post from so many hundreds of reviews about the iPad. Many thanks for taking the time to pen these lines, they mean a lot to me. I would be happy to review Apple products here in India. If you could send me an advance prototype of the iPhone4 I could review the same.

    Much Appreciated,

    Dennis

  4. Dennis,

I enjoyed reading your post in the IPad. You seem like a genuine tech afficionado and your observations are deeply intuitive and sincere. It has been our mission to raise the human-technology interface to appeal to the human spirit and soul. To merge technology and art in a manner akin to what the good lord did in making us human beings the way we are.

Dennis, would be happy to receive your feedback on the IPhone4. And while we are not inclined to disturb the integrity of your unpaid posts on this subject, we look forward to reading up on your views on our devices going forward and trust they will in their own way shape our development efforts going forward.

    Regards,

    Steve Jobs

  5. I would be delighted to be paid to write my mind and thoughts about anything. If you know someone at apple who would be kind enough to do so, please do let me know. Till then, this remains an unpaid piece my annonymous friend.
